Default FZ35 - robin's nest

I returned to a nesting area that I have found a robin's nest the past two season. Yes, she has returned for another season.

I'm not sure if two eggs will be the clutch this season. Last two years, four eggs have been laid, hatched, and fledglings have left. Last season, I managed a sequence of shots over three weeks, eggs to fledglings. Maybe this season too...? Plenty of predators, however.

Oh what gorgeous coloured eggs. Fingers crossed they both hatch and we can see your series as the chicks hatch and grow.

Default Another nest

I found another nest today, ... this one with three eggs. However, I am seeing many blue egg shells on lawns and driveways. Predators are taking the eggs, ... maybe crow.

Quite simply wow, the colour of the eggs is amazing. Make sure you keep looking out for the little fellows and protecting their nests. Cant wait to see the next series from you.

Default Update

In returning to the first nest today, one with two eggs, I found it empty! Yes, some critter has snatched the eggs. Proof in #1. This is very disappointing. Last year, I got many good shots of a nest of four eggs, then hatched chicks, then fledglings. The nest is in a great position for good access, something not all robin's nests afford. Maybe the moma robin will lay another set of eggs in this nest soon.

I also had an opportunity to visit #2 nest today, the one with three eggs. Today, I found four eggs! And, the moma robin was very attached until I approached with equipment running. She did let me get a shot of the nest, and I even managed a single shot of her, in much distress on a branch above the nest. I have tried often to get shots of the moma bird, but she is distressed and lands only for a brief time. Perhaps this nest has a good chance of survival.

In visiting many other residential properties today, I found many paratial blue egg shells on the ground. So, it is the season for laying eggs, but also the season for predators to snatch them out. Nature at work.
