Default photographing Auroras

It's getting time that a few might be showing here; with my FZ40, what settings would you all suggest to capture the beauty of these?

I'm guessing here Carol, but at ISO80 I would think you would be looking at 20 - 30 seconds.

Anyway you could practice... say pointing a dull torch on a fence or sheet trying to get the same type of brightness as the Auroras

Thanks Square One; it's hard to determine the brightness ahead of time, because they vary considerably.
