Default Another Finch - FZ150 (RAW)

This was shot RAW and then cropped and converted in Lightroom 3. There are more under it on Flickr. I shoot these guys while waiting for something else. These are probably our second most common bird lately after Eurasian House Sparrows.

Awesome shot! I have finches here also; love seeing them come to my feeders! You certainly captured the beautiful color on him!

great capture of an awesome coloured finch Steve! is the shooting in RAW that caused the noisy background? i used topaz denoise on it to see if i could improve a great shot... i hope you dont mind the intrusion, i wasnt going to show it but thought it worth a mention.

regards,
john

Thanks all. Glad you like my finch. And FITCIP, I don't mind, but I like mine better. There is a bit of detail loss with noise reduction and I was/am more concerned with the main target than the background anyway. This was ISO 400 and brightened up a bit in processing.

Re noise reduction, when I decide I care for more reduction than I can do in Lightroom, (which is new) I process in Elements as I have Neat Image as a plug-in, and that as lots of adjustment options, but I was more than content with this guy as is. I did shoot a few at ISO 800 today just to play with later.

thats a beauty.

I have to say I like it better without the noise. The FZ150 is looking better and better to me but the price just aint dropping enough to make me switch. Also to retain the detail on the bird but lower the noise one could use the paint brush in LR and just paint over the background then the bird will stay sharp with detail

I guess it is just a matter of preference. I have never worried about noise as much as some folks, unless it ruins the shot. I just consider it built in texture, like the grain of old time higher ISO film. Having said that though, this camera is a lot less noisy at ISO 400 than was my FZ7 or FZ18.

And yeah, very good camera in many ways.

Great color and detail in this one Steve. The FZ150 is in good hands.
