Thanks Carol and Mary. And Mary, the bird was not hunting. The young ones pick up sticks and leaves in the water, drop them, and then dive down and pick them up again. Practice it is.

Wow, I would have thought the wings would be folded back if it was diving, must be a big splash in the next millisecond?

Thanks Grounded, and sort of to the splash. Gulls don't usually go deep under like the terns do, rather, they plunge but break near the water surface. Especially for play stuff like this. I do have immersed shots when there was a fish on the other end of the dive, but those are usually Herring Gulls instead of the pictured Ring-billed Gull.
