Default Pixels or Super Zoom?

I need some education and not afraid to ask. I have tons to learn but need to know what to look for in a new camera. Megapixels or superzoom first? What other things are important to look for?
What do you experts recommend?
There are so many different cameras on the market and it is so hard when you don't know what to look for for the best buy.
Thanks.
E.

Eysha, what we need to know is how much you are prepared to spend, what you are interested in using the camera for, for instance for birds, you need a super zoom, landscapes require a wide angle lens, and macro needs are not the best on some models, If I were looking for a general purpose camera I would buy the Panasonic ZS15, though Fuji Olympus Sony and other brands are probably just as good, Don't get carried away with pixels, 10 is ample, and remember all things in photography are a compromise, to get one thing you loose another like us mortals, if you live in the city, you wish you lived in the country and vice versa. By the way I am not an expert so please read what others say.

Thanks Grounded. I recently bought a Samsung es28 and after taking only 502 photos it stopped working so i was very disapointed and annoyed but, i do miss having a small compact camera in my bag when out so that is what i am looking to buy again, not Samsung though.
I do like a long lens so have rejected the small otical ones. I am looking for good sharp photos and a camera that takes quick shots so i don't miss anything, like a bird taking off. Low light shots would be good too. Not bothered about video as i never use it.
I have spent the last week looking at reviews and the best ones seems to be for the older models of the Panasonic which, sadly are no longer available to buy now, and i don't really want to buy second hand.
I know there are trade offs as you say but i have to make sure i spend my money well and make sure the camera lasts a long time. No more than 200 GBP is my limit.
I have a Panasonic fz38 but want a small camera to carry easily and not take up space in my handbag and be a lot lighter than the big one i have.
I keep looking at reviews and i know they differ a lot depending on people's view point but i cannot find one that suits my needs so far.
Should i wait for the newer models to come out? I hear most new models come out near the end of the year so older models get reduced in price.
I look forward to reading the suggestions and say thanks in advance.
E.

G'day Eysha

Aahhh my ol' friend - I hear your struggles ... several thoughts for you with your search for a 'convenient camera'

The lens creates the image and is more important than the megapixels recording the image > so go for a good lens ... from your post I would suggest you look for something in the 10x to 15x range

As to buying at a reasonable price - wander around Boots + others looking for 2011 release-date cameras > they will be falling in price nowadays. Maybe something like the Lumix TZ20, 14mpx x 16x zoom could do you

Regards, Phil
