Default Old Man Tree w/ FZ200

Well not as happy as I had hoped with the sharpness of the first images straight out of the camera maybe I'm too particular lol. BUT then again I don't have anywhere near the knowledge and experience of, say, the cooper's hawk photo put up by happypeasant or the bird photos put up tonight from ltz470. That being said, I got a lot to learn about digital photography and I am enjoying every second of it and the new camera!

So, without further ado, here is a shot from my outing yesterday:

Definitely lost some detail/sharpness during the translation to here. Well ah well I'll figure out how to fix that also eventually.

You know the old saying "Your first 10,00 shots are your worst".

Hope you don't mind; I just threw in a little more contrast, and less light.

Hi Carol - looks better! - what did you use to adjust the photo?

Here's the original. The photos I'm taking are losing some sharpness from the camera to the site. What to do about that?

I took a stab, Lowered Midtone and uped contrast a bit! Don't know where the detail was lost to, it is sure lacking the sharpness i know the camera would have taken!

I mainly use the FastStone Imaging software. It's free, with many capabilities. It also has a sharpening tool, that is very easy to use, & see the results.

I downloaded FastStone and am going thru the learning curve now.

Per your comment on the where the detail was lost to - I noticed after shooting these first photos that in the FZ200's picture quality menu, the camera was factory set to the NATURAL (soft effect) setting, I changed the setting to STANDARD - and perhaps that will help. Also changed sharpness to +1 and noise reduction to -1. The cows below were taken prior to that.

Now, as another test, I took the snip below from the first video I made with the FZ200 - the in-camera video looks very sharp so I don't think there is anything wrong with the lens or camera electronics - but the photo is not as sharp after I transfered to my PC then uploaded to Photobucket then transferred to here.

So, all in all, it seems that to get a photo to look as detailed and sharp as in-camera, must one use a program such as FastStone to tweak the image prior to uploading to a photo site?

Thanks for answering my rather exhaustive queries!
