Default Youth Football Pic

I have been shooting pics (300-700 a game) of my son's team every game for the last three years and posting them on Photobucket for all the parents.
Just thought I'd share a few I shot today.

You caught the action very nicely, but you're overexposing. Look at the difference in the white helmets between number 1 and the rest. Dial down your EV and adjust in Photoshop.

Exposure can be tricky with football - especially with bright light and a mixture of Caucasian and African American skin tones. Helmets don't matter - the only thing that matters is the faces. Parents don't look at helmets they look at their kids faces. And, of course, things change based upon your shooting position relative to the players relative to the sun. For example, exposure in the last shot looks spot on. Even #3 looks pretty good - there isn't enough dynamic range in most cameras to get everything right. Facial highlights could be touched up a bit in some of these but especially with African American skin tones you don't want to under-expose them much at all - trying to bring them back in software can be very problematic.

Bottom line: your camera can't expose white helmets and facial tones BOTH properly in bright light. So, if you have to choose - always choose the faces.

I'm not that picky on these type of shots, I took around 400 that day all on Burst 3mp. I'm mostly tying to get some good action the parents will like. I can see now the overexposing now where I hadn't givin it much thought before! Thanks for the suggestions!
