I still gotta find away to tell Santa, kinda dreading that! :/ We have an expensive trip to Seattle at the end of the month to see our son come home from his deployment in Afghanistan.
You dont have to worry too much about HDR because the Active D- Lighting feature does a pretty good job in most situations. I would only use HDR in extreme lighting conditions one reason is you usually need a tripod to cut out blur.
You can see ADL at work in my park shot, the sky was very bright that day. Have a look at Ken Rockwells site he shows ADL there.

This is the 18-55 kit lens that came with the camera. Haven't bought any new lenses yet. Just a few macro attachments. Next on the list is a 55-300 vr and a 35 prime. Just this weekend i got a wide angle converter and some filters. Used the wide angle on the Atv shots. Its just short of a fish eye effect and a nice little attachment for under 15 bucks.

Ended up getting Santa a new 10" tablet, she's happy now, maybe I should try for a second lens while she's still happy!

Taken the new D5100 out and am really pleased with the results so far, weather wise has not been ideal but so far i think this was a good move for me. I still will hold on to the FZ47, I need the 10fps and 600mm zoom for sons football and I think I have got some cool shots with the FZ's. I might send the FZ35 to Nastya the orphan we have been sponsoring in Ukraine.

From what I've read, the D5100 is a very capable camera. Enjoy it.

I thought you might like to see this.
This was taken in a nearly dark theatre zoomed in ,onto my grandson who was playing a rat in a Christmas pantomime called Dick Whittington. They are not only on a dimly lit stage but are wearing a dark make up, to look like rats. You can see this by looking at their hands that don't appear to have any make up on. iso 2500 F5.3 1/50th. I was well back in the audience and flash photography was not allowed, plus they were moving all the time even in this shot.
So all in all I was well pleased.

As usual it looks like I've muffed up the photo post.
Here it is again.
Still not right but you get the idea. By the way it was hand held obviously. My Grandson is third from the left ,I was focusing on him as best I could. This is where for me the red dot focus spots on the D5100 come into there own.
