Default question regarding this panasonic camera

A friend of mine is keen on buy the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1 Camera. I wondered if anyone knows much about this camera. Is it worth the money for the lens even though it only has the 2 megapixels, I feel that at least 3 mega pixels would be a better deal.

I've had the fz1 since August and continue to marvel at the excellence of the Leica lens and the overall quality of the camera. It has essentially replaced the legendary Olympus c2100 (IMO). At ~$300US it is an exceptional buy. The 12x zoom (420mm) allows for on-the-spot framing making cropping unneccessary. Therefore the 2mp is quite sufficient, cropping being the only real advantage to increased pixels. I get excellent 8x10 prints from the 2mp output of the fz1. Furthermore, the fz1 can be readily upgraded to fz2 fuctionality giving the camera manual aperature and shutter priorities and decreased jpg compression among other additions.

Perhaps your friend should look into the DMC-FZ10 (the newer model). That is, of course, if it released in your area (europe really doesn't have any out yet)

I have the FZ1 and LOVE IT! It's a great camera and you would never know that it was only 2 MP! I have done some 8x10's that look awesome!

If you can afford it, go with the FZ10, which is 4 MP and has other bells & whistles the FZ1 doesn't, including manual focus and a hot shoe for external flash. The down side is that the FZ10's threads are 72mm and 72mm filters cost more than the same filter in 55mm threads (the FZ1 uses 55mm).
