Default 12-35mm zoom vs 25mm prime. Which has better image quality?

I'm looking for versatility and I usually don't shoot lower than 2.8 because I can never get all of my subject in focus.

However, I've been reading that prime lenses destroy zooms in terms of image quality. Is this true with the Panasonic 12-35/30-100 vs the Panasonic 25mm and the Olympus 45mm?

It is very well known that a prime lens will have superior image quality compared with any zoom lens - and so it should with less design criteria to be satisfied along the way

It is also very well known that every zoom lens is much more versatile than a prime lens if for no other reason than its variable-focal aspects

3/4 of us photographers accept versatility and so we use zoom lenses exclusively & quite happily - 2% want the ultimate in image sharpness / quality and only shoot with primes - and many photographers have a bit of both

You are at choice - you may choose which way you want to go, and there'll be a shop willing to cater for you as well

So the 4 point advantage on DXO doesn't make a HUGE difference?

G'day acm

I can't see where you are coming from nor the reason for your response

I have been looking at SLR lens review reports for over 50 years, so I do not get excited these days one way or the other - it's just a 'review'

There are 'performance reviews' of lenses, conducted in the laboratory and reviewed under a microscope .... and there are the real-world lens reviews via real photographers out in the field

As I said above - you are at choice

Phil
