Default Glad to find the FZ1

I know it's older, and didn't do well here in the US, didn't seem to at least, but I've come across a, gasp, *grocery store*, which has an 'electronics' area, and sure enough, they have them in stock. I've been looking for a high optical zoom digicam to replace the Minolta Dimage 5 which was stolen from my wife's car right before X-mas, last year....

While I really want one of the new Canon digital Rebel, this one, given the price, $238 I'm almost sure, which seems too good now that I've done investigation, is likely too tough to resist.

I'll be digging through the forum to see what y'all have to say about it. Dug through a goodly amount of another forum, and once the 10 came out, the 1 seemed to disappear from the discussion.

Man, not only a 12X optical zoom, but a Leica, no less....

*update*: I had to stop by the store to see how many they had, and what the exact price was. Price was $269, and they had one left. Notice I said "had". Battery is charging now...I don't know if I can wait the two hours, or whatever. That's what manual reading if for, I guess....

Thanks,

Welcome. You certainly got a good deal. I just got mine for $300 shipped to my door. I've only had it for about a week but love it so far. Upgraded to the FZ2 firmware and will be giving it a real good workout on my Caribbean cruise startng on Saturday.

What's odd is, I researched the crap outta digicams, and this one *never* popped up.

I am a bit surprised at the compactness of the storage media, and while I like the compact flash format, I'll learn to live with this one. I've read there are 128 meg cards for like $32, might be wrong about this, but that's hard to beat. I was very happy with the 1 gig microdrive I had, especially as it was only about $200, mid-last year.

To me, one of the big downsides of the Minolta I had, was it didn't have any sound. It's not like I'm going to use this type of camera as a camcorder, but I might want to make notes of something, yet not have a piece of paper, or whatever.

I'm glad to see this camera has the following it does, as everyone seems so involved in megapixels, they lose sight of the importance of *optical* magnification. In theory, you have infinite digital zoom available with PhotoShop or Picture Publisher, so having it in the camera isn't particularly important.

IMO, I think they did extremely well here in the US. I was at the store the day after they got them in for the first time and the digital sales manager couldn't stop raving about it!

I love my FZ1! Welcome to the world of FZ1!

BTW, what grocery store was selling FZ1's?

Have fun on your cruise. I didn't have a FZ1 when my wife & I went on ours. I just had a $60 APS:

Fred Meyer, the owners of Kroger, elsewhere. This particular store is in a small town, and they are kind of an all-in-one place, but I never expected to come across a find there.

After playing with it for a couple of hours last night, I'm pleased. Seems to be a little pixelated on some indoor shots, but then I haven't gotten to do a true white balance, yet, and I'm unlearning the habits my Minolta digicam got me into....
