I hope you weren't too close , he looks like he is seriously thinking of giving you a good peck :-).I think the birds just about right,if you had reduced the amount of neck it might have made it difficult to identify,plus heads smack in the middle of photo's never look quite right.
It's something I learnt through painting people and animal portraits on and off for approx 50 yrs.
