Hi again all. Some of you might be interested in my first amateur
impressions of MY FZ20 and pictures. First of all, I decided to
purchase an FZ10 and did indeed purchase one and loved it. I could
return it within a month. Towards the end of that month the new model
FZ20 was announced. I returned my FZ10 and got on line for an FZ20,
estimated delivery date Oct.1. If it would have been past the 30 day
limit I would have kept the FZ10 until I could see FZ20 results and
reviews. I had severe withdrawals after about 1 month without my FZ10
and found the FZ20 immediately available online. I bought it. I have
had a few days to take a few photo's and try some setting adjustments
and thought that I would let you know my impressions to go along with
the others now coming in. I stress now that I feel that my particular
camera may be defective to a degree. I have tried all the metering and
autofocus modes and used manual and auto focus both with OIS on and
off. I came to the conclusion that my "auto focus" isnt working
correctly. Even so, I feel that almost all of my pictures were softer
and noisier than my FZ10's pictures. The place I bought my camera
doesnt know when they will get replacements in so I dont know how long
it will be before I can give a review of a different FZ20. I will
still take delivery on Oct.1 if it comes in first and try that one to
compare. Most if not all of these pictures were manually focused, OIS
off on a monopod, except for my dog and the macro. The The "PIC.ADJ"
were all on "standard". Just click on the photo for the full size
image. Sample FZ20 pics link http://www.microwavedave.smugmug.com

Those are still some wonderful pictures. I just recieved my FZ20 yesterday and absolutely love it, but I'm wondering if the FZ10 is simply the better camera. I am reading from dpreview about the issues of the FZ20 and wondering if I made the right choice, considering the FZ10 can be bought for 399. I figured though, for $139 more, might as well get the better camera but the question is, which is the better one???

I, however, do not have any problems with the autofocus. It focuses very quickly except in low light situations in which it takes a bit longer, not much though. Hopefully you get your new camera soon because I would love to read your review comapring the FZ10 to the FZ20. Thanks for the info and the wonderful shots!!!

I have both the FZ10 and FZ20 and in my opinion the FZ20 is a very nice iterative step better than my FZ10. The autofocus is more precise as measured by Focus Magic analysis, the resolution is measurably higher, default color is better and chromatic aberration at full zoom much less than with my FZ10.

Let me know if you want some comparative full size samples and I'll take them and post them.

I would like to see3 identical portrait shotstaken from a tripod (turn OIS off), one taken by the FZ10 and 2 by the FZ20, one without and one with in-camera noise reduction. I want to see how the noise reduction system on the FZ20 affects fine detail in skin and hair of the subject. Please set all picture adjustments to low in the FZ10 & 20, use the same aperture on both camerasand post the images full size without any post-processing.

I would also be keen to see these pictures because I am just about to buy my FZ20 and you guys, bar Lin Evans, are scaring me by saying the FZ10 is better.

I don't think resolution can be corectly measured with Focus Magic.

I don't think it can either, but who's measuring "resolution" with it? What I said is that I used Focus Magic to analyze autofocus accuracy and it indeed can do this.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to help you with portrait shots because I have no subjects or models. I can take landscapes, wildlife, Gretag McBeth color charts, art objects, etc., but I don't do portraits and am not set up to be of any help in that department.

Best regards,

Sorry, I mis read your post but how did you measure the higher resolution? Did you use a resolution chart?

While you are shooting, a piece of graph paper at wide angle and macro for barrel distortion. Something straight in the distance near the edge of the frame for pincussion.

Just a couple of thoughts. The lens are the same so the setup should work for both.

I'm hovering between the KM Z3 and FZ20. Former seems to have so intial build quality issues (it either works or they have to replace it because of ...). I've got till Christmas before the next big trip, but I'd like to practice with it before I got. BTW: how is the startup time indoors?

Bill.
