I have been trying to take pictures of birds with my FZ20.

They move so fast and most of the time don't come out sharp.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

I was at a bird blind today trying to get some clear shots of birds (which I got lucky with a few), and all of a sudden, all the birds took off in a hurry.

I then heard the sound of flapping wings that sounded like a rather large bird and managed to get this shot off.

Let me know what you think. And any pointers would be appreciated.

I had the same problem when using program mode. But try the shutter priority setting with a fast shutter speed and eventually the continuous auto focus for catching birds in flight.

In my gallery at http://miljokemi.dk/coppermine you will notice that the earliest of my bird shots are more or less blurred but the herons (hejre) and the cormorant (skarv) caught in the air are fine. The cormorants in the tree are sharp too.

Your hawk is nice and your shot would have been great if you had caught it full frontal.

Nice shots...

I set up a page on my site for birds and posted 4 pics from yesterday.

I will try what you say today.

Do you use a tri-pod?

Thanks for the tips.

You too have several nice shots. I really like your night shots and your moon shoot is just awesome.

No all my shots are handheld.

Thanks.

I'm going back today to try shutter priority mode, and experament with some other stuff.

My night shots where all done in night scenery mode with a tri-pod, and the moon shot was in manual mode with a tri=pod.

All the other shots where hand held in Program or Macro mode.

Thanks for the tips.

Ooops..sorry about that image size..didn't mean for it to come out quite that big.

BobC and I ran into eachother today... You might say we got Bird blindsided.

That hawk is beautiful...but I got exactly 4 shots off before it played hide and seek for the rest of the day. It was always in the area, but behind a tree, a bush, or close but out of sight. I think it might have been hunting for its young, because I think it grabbed a few birds out of the air...

It didn't...if you remember, when I walked into the blind it disappeared, but came back a little bit later for just a few moments. Thats when I got my 4 shots off. You were standing right next to me at the time. After that, never got a really good look at it again.
