I purchased a Quantaray QB 383 S external flash last night. I heard that it was a Sunpack 383.

Are they one and the same?

The box says... By Sunpak.

Here is a picture of the back of the flash. Maybe someone could tell me if it is or not.

Thanks in advance

bobc

Dunno. But it's totally NOT a Leica.

I ordered the Sunpak 383 from BH Photo Video on Sunday and I received it this Wednesday in Belgium !.

Looks like exactly the same as the Sunpak.

Philippe.

I thought so.

I also got a Quantaray QSX 9500 tripod that is exactly the same as the Sunpak 7500 Pro.

Hey bobc,

Just curious, how much was the Quantaray QB 383 S?

It looks exactly like the Sunpak I bought from B&H.
If you don't mind me asking?

I paid $99.95 at Ritz Camera. I probbly could have got it cheaper, but I wanted to just pick it up right away at a store, and it was close and they had them in stock.

I like to buy from stores so I can pick it right up, and take it right back if something is wrong.

Yep, that's it! I almost bought mine at Ritz, too, but I went ahead and got mine online (the Sunpak).

Now, go learn all you can about it, so you can help us do better with it! :-)

Seriously, I think it's great. I am a novice, though, and it seems every environment is different (where you can bounce, what camera and flashsettings, etc).

I usually set the flash to the M position, camera flash mode to manual (so I can adjust the aperture), flash & camera to ISO 100, and camera aperture to what it says on the flash for the distance the flash has to travel.

If you set the camera flash mode to preset, it locks the aperture to f2.8 and limits the shutter speed between 1/60 and 1/250.

So I will set the aperture as follows (with flash set to 1/16, and not bouncing)

4 ft. - f8.0, 8ft. - f4.0, 11ft. - f2.8... etc...

As you move the flash setting from 1/16 to full you get greater distance.

If I am bouncing, I try to ball park the distance and make the appropriate settings.

Does this help?

Sorry, I am a little late with this pic Bob but I was busy all day with work. This is a pic of my Sunpack 383.
