Hello everyone.

This is my first post, though I've been lurking for a while since I've been researching my potential purchase of an FZ20 for a little bit now. One recurring topic on this and other fora is the relative noise performance of the FZ10 versus the FZ20. Anyway, a chap at work has an FZ10 so, when a friend bought an FZ20, I saw an opportunity to compare the two.

I tried to be as scientific as possible - though this was ultimately a couple of snaps taken during a 5 minute break at work. Both cameras were set to ISO 400, standard levels for sharpness, contrast, etc., white balance was set to tungsten light (though this is something that I would change to cloudy day were I to do it again.) I then focussed the camera on a plant about 10' away and switched to MF before taking a picture of a plain, grayish-coloured cabinet from a distance of ~6". This should mean that the only visible detail is noise. Both cameras were set to F2.8 and 1/30second exposure plus full wide angle.

The attached image shows a 300x100 100% crop for both cameras and, beneath each, a 100x100 100% crop of the R, G & B channels. I also resized (using PSP8 Smart Resize) the FZ20 image to the same size as the FZ10 image and added the crops from that.

I'm fairly confused, but that's nothing new. Which is the FZ10?

Good comparison..showing what a lot of people believe that the FZ10 has less noise than the 20....

I don't understand why you would resize the FZ20 shot to 4mb.
The FZ20 is capable of 5mb and that's what I would use.
If I did the comparison test, I would simply crop to the same size as the FZ10 control photo.
It looks to me like you are handicapping the FZ20 to perform at the FZ10's level.
Nevertheless, I appreciate your effort and approach. I don't have access to an FZ10 otherwise I would do the test as described above. Wonder if you can do that if you get a chance.
TIA.

I was thinking that since both cameras are capable of 4 Mpixel..that would be the true comparison. Then just for kicks and giggles, you can see if there is a big difference between those shots, and a 5 Mpixel image on FZ20.
