Hello,

If you have this situation:

$359.99 - FZ3
$539.99 - FZ20

and

359.99 USD = 279.042 EUR
539.99 USD = 418.513 EUR

and in my country this machine costs
FZ3 > 400€
FZ20 > 600€

what do you buy?

thanks
alex

I prefer the compact size and lower price of the FZ-3, personally. You can't go wrong with any of these cameras, including the FZ-1. To me, the ability to just grab the cam, take it anywhere, not worry about it or have it be a nuisance due to its size outweighs the extra megapixels. That, plus to $200 price difference is nothing to sneeze at. Realize you will want an extra battery, larger SD card, filters, a new case, etc. The fun doesn't stop with the cost of the camera. I've added something new to my digital set-up every couple weeks since buying the FZ-1 back in June. However, if you do a lot of cropping in a photo editor, or plan on making prints larger than 8X10 then go with the 20. The 20 also has a manual focus ring which is nice. Purely subjective, but to me compactness and the $200 price difference puts me in favor of the FZ-3. All the Lumixes, however, share essentially the same excellent optics, effective OIS system and Venus processing engine which sets them apart. They all take excellent pics, under almost any circumstance you throw at them.

You won't be disappointed with either one. It's a win/win, so you might as well toss a coin. Heads FZ-3, tails FZ-20 :?

:?: I like all the threads of positive
DATA about the dmc fz series, but I didn't
get an original answer on the forum about
the ? on the long lag to focus that heresay
from a d-SLR camera bug and several link
reviews form Steve's had. Also, how good
in f-stops or SS is the anti shake? Fianlly
on the Z3 vs z20, 1.the difference drops to $
$140 on line buys 2. what diffence does
the plastic vs metal body make? 3. Does
one really do much croping if you have
already zoomed 12x? 4. Indoors, does the
15' flash make a lot of difference to the
22' flash of the z20. Also the Z20 only
allows 5 MP then 3MP, 4MP would have been
nice.

:| One final question. I have been using
a 2mp Fuji FinePix 3800 for 3 years and
got great pictures up to 8x10's. However
going up to 11x14 stretched the pixels too
much and lead to detail and color fade.
What might I expect if I chose the FZ3 on
11x14 from a 3.1 MP JPEG?

Thanks--JOEBEAR

Go here...

Compare all the features. There is a lot more than just a bigger price tag and more megapixels.

I have an FZ20, but think that the FZ3 is a great camera as well. It depends on what features you think are important.

I'd go for the fz20 if you don't mind a larger camera. Better for cropping and a few more features too, but you can't go wrong with the fz3 either. As Nicktrop says, you won't be disappointed as the Lumix line is very versatile and good value.

On another matter-it makes you wonder why we in other countries pay inflated prices for these cameras, doesn't it? I'm in Canada, and the fz20 is $900, and if you do the conversion for the American price ($539),in Can. $'s, the price should be around about $650 Can. I probably would have bought a unit from the U.S., but then you have to worry about the warranty, shipping, duty chargesetc. I don't know why Panasonic is "hosing" people from other countries, but it would be nice if their pricing was in line with the U.S. products. Nikon and Canon seem to be adjusting to the change in currencyvalues here in Canada. Heck, the U.S. dollar is dropping like a stone lately on world currency markets, but we don't seem to benefit from the increase value of our dollars, euros, and pounds etc. There, I got that off my chest. Anyone else wonder about this, or am I a lone whiner?:? cheers...............thekman.

There have been misinformation about the long focus lag. It was caused by some reviewers measuring the lag with the 9-point focusing, which is slow. You would normally use spot focusing and that is much faster.

I went with fz3 because of price and size. If you don't print larger than 8x10, you would not see any differences in picture quality. You have to be a pro to get the advantage of the fz20 features. Don't waste your money on something that you don't really need yet. Cameras develop so fast that you'd be upgrading in couple of years anyway.
