OK so it's maybe a dumb question and I can't do the simple check needed to answer it since I am not yet a Fluzi owner (close, though).

Is there any quality difference, actual or expected, between using dig zoom or just cropping the 12x and resizing?

(My gut reaction is they would be very similar - if not identical - but some of the DZ algorithms may tip the scales in their direction.)

I would say that they are close because of the image degrigation, but not the same in terms of the image size. By cropping you will be reducing the total number of pixels in the image. But by using the digital zoom you would degrigate the image to about the same quality without changing the number of pixels in the image.

But I could be wrong.

I have seen some pretty remarkable shots posted at full digital zoom, and have taken somefairly good ones as well.

personally, i think that cropping produces better image than digital zoom.

here is a pic comparison i did last time between a moon shot, digital and cropped

digital zoom on fz10

optical zoom and cropped

personally i find the optical zoom and crop a tad sharper.

bobc is right with regards to the size though, the cropped image would allow smaller prints compared to digital zoomed one.

tchuane,

Nice shots. Did you use a tripod, 2sec timer, and turnIS mode off for your shots?

This was my first shots ever with the FZ10 sometime in Aug 04. I did not use tripod but rested the camera on the window grill. No timer, and OIS mode 2.

That may be why the digital zoom shot is not as sharp.

Great shots for first time hand held. It took me a while to get good shots with a tripod.

Well I think all the pics submitted are excellent. Am going to print out bobc's two pics and compare - thanks to you both!

That is EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Is it just me or do both OZ's look slightly brighter/whiter than their respective DZ's?

Why did you turn your IS off?

Cheers
