when my fz10 is in night portrait mode it is impossible for it to lock focus. green light always blinks on half shutter press. the same scene, adjusted to any of the other modes, quickly locks focus. why is it like that?

I never use the pre-set modes much on my FZ-1, but I might recommend trying spot focus. Focus on the most contrasty vertical line in the frame. Might help.
