Spot focus could help. Things which might complicate the problem would be if a slow shutter speed was used while the shot was handheld rather than taken while using a monopod or tripod, if the in-camera noise reduction was set to high, if OIS was set to 1 rather than 2.

With the too bright/overexposed surrounding landscape, I dunno...that might be a result of using spot metering rather than center weight or multiple. The camera tried to properly expose the deer, but at the expense of overexposing the surroundings.

Just curious....did you change the "conversion" setting to tele after attaching the lens? (It's on page 3 of 3 of the Rec menu.)
