Here is one test. Two images one taken at 12x and the other taken at 48x. The 12x image was cropped to match the 48x one (as close as possible).

A tripod was used for both with IS off. No post enhancments where done to either one.

I would like to know which one looks better.

The photo on the top looks like it has more compression artefacts in it when compared to the photo on the bottom. The photo on the top has more of a pink colour.

Bob the second lower one.
top one has a slight pink cast and some loose pixals
BUT printed to A4 will still be good

The bottom one is the 48x one. I think this shows that digital zoom"IS" quite usefull.

Sure nothing can beat a telephoto lense, but digital zoom can be quite usefull under many circemstances.

The second one looks better. But the comparison is not right. You should blow op the size of the first 300 percent. And than crop. Thats an equal comparison.
