hmm I don't know. Some details are better in the second. But the even blue / green parts seem more smooth in the cropped picture.

Same quality I guess...

So i'd go with 12 x optical, that way you have the whole picture instead of only the cropped part :G

Actually I switched them. The bottom one is the 12x resize & crop. I think that the optical zoom on the camera does a slightly better job than cropping on the PC.

But... These shots where taken with a tripod... I am going to try to do some handheld shots today and do the same thing with those.

The manual says that the IS may not be as effective in the digital zoom range, which may be why the 12x shots might turn out better with hand held shots.

I will post the results of that test here as well.

Thank you all for your input... This is an interesting thread, and if anyone would like to conduct some tests to post here... Please do so.

Oh... by the way... I used PS Elements 3.0 to do the work on both tests.

Hmmm... I wonder if they would come out different using a different editor?

at least you have proved to me that DZ is able to get almost same quality (if not better) than OZ post-magnified and cropped, with tripod that is. Now, I am looking forward to see what's the difference in OIS not using tripod.

Best regards

The first one was the resized & cropped 12x hand held shot.

But I think it is slightly better than the 48x hand held shot.

But overall... I think there is definatly uses for digital zoom...

And I don't think the the 48x is that much better than the 12x with the tripod

Or the 12x is that much better than the 48x without the tripod.

They are pretty close in both cases. So it's up to the person.

zoom in 500% and
no 1 has some dark pixels dotted around NOT artifacts
no 2 seems smoother but less contrasty.
