For the moment I can tell you that there are a few more very nice features, and yes I do know what they are, however we will all wait for PMA

Does Ted's Camera in Australia know something or is he just blowing smoke? Picture looks like an FZ3, but he claims it is an FZ5 available in March for $699. The specs all look like FZ3 specs, except for the megapixels...

If you read the text in the Teds Camera blurb, you find it's 3.1 "effective" megapixels -- it may be a 5MPx sensor, but not all of it is used...

In other words, the successor to the FZ3, not a replacement for the FZ20.

From the Ted's advertisment...

"The LUMIX DMC-FZ5 digital camera is equipped with a 3.1 mega effective pixels CCD and LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens offering 12x optical zoom (equivalent to 35 to 420mm with a 35mm film camera) with F2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range."

Perhaps it's just an FZ3 with interpolation? Sounds to me like they just shoehorned some of the FZ20's features into the smaller body, but kept the FZ3's 3MP CCD...

Looks to me like Ted just took an FZ3 spec sheet and changed the name and the pixel rating on the intro. He uses the phrase "5 effective megapixels" at the top and in the middle section he says "3.1 mega effective pixels"

The price, at $200-250 more than an FZ3, seems to give more credibility to a real 5 megapixel camera. Or that's a lot of cash to spend on interpolation! What does Ted know?

Price ? Less than FZ20
Hmm... FZ20 is $599 (worst case, if you pay full MSRP, which no one in their right mind does)... the FZ5 is advertised at $699?

hardly "less than FZ20"...

So is it really a 5mp??

From the link provided above,

1. 3.1-megapixel 12x optical model in a compact body

I'm not ready to trash my FZ20 just yet.

Jeff

Edit... I think a lot of us are posting at the same time.. Another manufacturer has 2 cameras, 1 stated at 6mp "effective" the other at 12.3mp "effective".

I think that's $699 Australian $. At last check that would translate to about $400 or so US$.. I don't doubt it's probably a nice camera but it isn't going to knock out the FZ20.

for sure i'm keeping mine! even if the FZ5is a "real" 5MP, it still offers nothing i don't already have with my FZ20, except smaller, and frankly, that's hardly worth getting all that worked up about!

the other question that comes to mind is, whyissome obscure camera store in Australia the first one to introduce a "breakthrough" model like this is claimed to be? seems to me that if Panasonic really did cram a legitimate 5MP sensor into an FZ3 size body/lens, word would be all over the photo mags and camera review sites, especially if it's coming out next month!!
