How is this done, if the lens is still f2.8 what have they done to the sensor....
If this is true then FZ10/15/20's would be less desirable...

That is the same lens specs as on the new FZ20. I agree with boyzo the CCD would have to be considerably smaller to get the same performance with a smaller lens size. I think REALYTYCHECK needs to post some info to back up his claims.

i know the FZ3 has a smaller sensor, but ithought the actual lenses were the same size, andthe reason the FZ15/20 lensis so much larger is simply to accommodate the "manual focus" function??

No the filter ring is 72mm (FZ1 is 55) the glass on FZ20 is HUGE
the FZ10/20 have larger area sensors for 4/5MP

For FZ5 to be FZ3 size they need to use beam splitting an dfiltering to deliver the image in 3 parts R B G to 3 sensors and recombine into the venus engine.
This is not possible in the camera body depth.

MORE details

FZ20 glass is bigger because sensor is bigger....

Yes
if FZ5 is FZ3 size and 5MP its a break thru' and why would you then buy a FZ20 at 2X the mass and bulk.
Don't add up except if claim is true must be a price penalty for the FZ5 like STEEP...
