well worth a read.
good handling of DOF too
although they use a DSLR which are very close to 35mm SLR's with respect to DOF.
COmpact digi cams have too much depth of field so comaparison
ie DSLR / FZ's is not accurate
ratio for DSLR is 1.6 to one
ratio for FZ's is 4 or 5 to one.

To blurr the background use a low f number ie f2.8 f3.3 f4 you need to use a high zoom and step backfrom subject if possible.

The CCD (sensor) in the FZ's are smaller in area compared to 35mm film this means 1/4 typically in area, this means f2.8 in the FZ's behave more like f8 in a 35mm.

Reality is small sensor digi cams have too much depth of field, best you can do is use large aperture and high zoom.
