Is it normal for the Fz20 to have dificulty focusingon an object which ,for example, is about 2-3 feet from the camera with the camera lens/zoom at 6X or higher?

It focuses fine with objects that are at a farther distance.

Its just kind of annoying

It searches in and out but often fails to acheive focus.

This is with the lens at 2.8 set to Program mode.

I think you are going beyond the focal limits of the lens. That is, at 6x you are at about 200mm or so.. On a 35mm camera, at least with my olympus lenses, the closest range at that length is about 4.5 - 5 feet. My fz20 behaves the same way btw.. Even with manual focus.

Minimum focus distance for FZ20 at 12x is between 1,6-1,9m.
Closer subjects won't be in focus at 12x without additional close ups lenses

for those in the states, that's abot 6 feet minimum distance for full zoom...:G ifyouback off the zoom to about 3x, you can focus at 3-4 feet, but there's a zone in there where you can't use enough zoom to bring the subject as close as you want, but it's too far away for a good macro shot, either...

Try putting it on macro.

See my earlier post:
http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...37&forum_id=23

With the camera alone, the minimal focus distance increases rapidly once you get beyond around 2.5x zoom (from a few cm away from the camera at 2.5x zoom to about 2m away at 12x zoom). If you're looking for maximum image size, 2-2.5x zoom gives you best results for the camera alone.

A macro lens will help reduce that minimal focus distance for the higher zooms (again, see the post I cited above).

Macro mode won't help with this problem (if you can't focus manually, you'll never be able to autofocus!), however at the closer distances, if manual focus works then use Macro mode rather than Program mode.
