A Pana Rep said new FZ30 6 months away with 6mp
And yes 6mp from FZ20 size CCD.
It appears the the FZ5 is indeed true 5mp from FZ3 size CCD.
Pana are using techniques for CCD's they use for mobile phones and Video cam sensors, are able to cram more mp onto existing chip areas.
noise at higher ISO well who knows at this stage.

interesting thread, that... i don't think i'd be all that interested in a 6MP FZ, unless Panasonic found a way to drastically reduce noise. in fact, the only reason i bought an FZ20 instead of FZ15 was because i figured the noise penalty for the 5MP versionwouldn't be THAT bad compared to the 4, and the added resolution would give me plenty of room for cropping images and still yield nice 8x10 images. otherwise, even 4MP would be more than adequate. i see no need for 6, unless you're planning on making poster-sized prints. now, if Pana could figure a way to jack up the ISO capability, instead of more MP, so the FZ would be relatively 'clean' at ISO400 or even 800, while still retaining the fast lens aperture and 12x zoom, THAT would be an upgrade worth having! so, as one poster mentioned, would a sharper, higher resolution EVF...

If Panasonic incorporates a noise elimnation circuit(*) , or something similar to NeatImage or Noiseware it will be possible.

Canon's E20 has such(*), and from what I've seen the results are impressive. ISO up to 3200.

Edit..add..
Yes of course the E20 has a large CMOS. But just compring to other cameras in it's class.

John

Thanks for the news ! I just spotted the post now. I think the FZ30 would have to have some pretty nice features to tempt any upgrade from the FZ10. I'm wondering if they'll use the CCD from the LC1 or stick to the one that's already in the FZ10/20 and I do hope they increase the pixel count for the EVF and add low light gain (there I go bitching about it).

While a higher res evf with low light gain-up, and low noise high ISO shots would of course be nice, I would like the FZ-30 to be an edible digital camera. If Pana could do that, count me in.
