I was discouraged by the high cost of macro ringlights, so decided to try and build one of my own. After several attempts, I came up with this rough effort. Surprisingly, it works quite well, and I'm now ready to give it a good try. The basic parts and prices are:
1) 18 led's - I bought 50 for about $11.00 on ebay (includes shipping)
2) Resistors - about $3.00 for 50
3) Wire - 5 bucks at Radio shack
4) 9v snap attachment - $1.50 for 3 at Radio Shack
5) 9v battery - 2 for $1.00
6) Housing - $1.40 at Home Depot (a flexible plastic electrical housing)

I found a plan on the internet, and adapted it and soldered it up. The plastic is flexible, so it fits snug over an adapter, and can be slid down to fit snug over the focus ring. I'm no electronics expert, but I think most people with a basic knowledge can do it.
