...really a shame. They did miss the boat, and their partnership with Panasonic seemed too little too late. They'll survive it, hopefully.

The new Dslr M series (planned 2006) Will be a great camera.. Hope they hold their heads above the water till then...

I think money will come forward they are an icon in 35mm photography the M series rangefinders.

The Leitz family long ago sold out.

Leica = Leitz Camera Works

Enter digital and panasonic Lumix FZxx...

That really isn't good news. With every new technology shift there will be winners and losers, let's hope it isn't the latter in this case.

By one hand it's a pitty, but by the other hand the my old Leicas value will increase notably $$$$$$

II, III, M2, M3, M5, M4.2, SL, R3, R4, and FZ20*

You know, on the one hand they always made a very high quality product. Admire a company that "ho's" their name selectively as they did with the Pana's.

On the other hand, they charged an obscene amount of $$$ for their cameras, and one becomes hard-pressed - even if you're wealthy, to cost-justify the difference between Leica and Contax or Pentax or Canon based on quality alone.

Really, I think Canon and their Canonette series were the Leica killers going back to the 60's, and it's been slow death ever since.
