They look like little aliens.
Great shots.

tchuanye...your macros are truly amazing. Could you please give us newbies, who cannot for the life of us try to shoot like you, some basic info on what specs you used while shooting. Also if you are using an external flash and bouncing it...what do you bounce it off, especially outdoors.

thanks...just hoping to learn from someone who is much better than me

Hi tchuanye,

Funky Shots. DOF seems really low are you using a different setup for these or the same 6T + sigma? I like the photos but they seem more abstract with the very limited DOF, almost like the head is something separate. Those JPEG compressions also look a little harsh. Still very interesting, I would love to find a mantis as they make such great subjects.

I use a white card board as a bounce flash card. Attached to the flash by rubber band.

Specs: Try to use F8 for higher DOF. Try to use lower ISO to minimise noise. and ext Flash really helps. Adjust shutter speed accordingly to your liking....but not too slow (e.g. 1/30) else, camera shake. IF subject is moving, choose higher shutter speed.

Hi TM, yes its the same set up. The low DOF could be due to the head being further from the main body, so from the front, the eyes is sharp while body is not. These mantis kept on following me, I tried to take the side, but it kept turning to face me, so no choice, had to take from this posture.

Agree with the compressions. I ran the img thru neatimage TWICE! The shot was underexposed, so had to up the levels and USM it. Produced quite alot of noise. So had to Neatimage it twice to get a clean image, but at the expanse of compression....
