i understand that a linear polarizer is sufficient for the fz20 right? my question now is with regard to brand and coatings. I read somewhere that one should stay away from Tiffen polarizers. Is this still true? It is just that the Hoya polarizers cost nearly twice as much. also, how necessary is multi-coating on the filters? thanks!

A pair of 62mm Hoya standard filters should be all you need. A UV and a Linear polarizer should cost under $45.00 on ebay. They are coated and have threads on both sides.

I have a Tiffen linear polarizer. I've used it a few times and have not had any problems with it (that I can see).
