Am I correct? If I add the TL-55 Canon tele lens to the FZ-20 and go to full zoom, ie 12X would it be the same as going to 12X plus 6X digital as far as viewing? What I am trying to determine is can I see, before I buy, what the magnification will look like before I buy this lens? Sort of a test drive.

The best you can do is focus on some mid range object at 12x. Then use the digital magnification feature.

Thanks for your reply. So, if I go 12X optical plus 6X digital equaling 18X in all this should be what I would see in the viewfinder if I were to have 12X zoom on the FZ plus the Canon TL-55? If my thinking is wrong, how would I duplicate what 12X plus TL-55 would look like (magnifcation wise) before purchasing?

I have tested this in the past and with the TL55 you get approx the same magnification (frame area) as 12x optical + 2x digital or 14x.

that's because the "12x" refers to the base focal length of 36mm. 12x36=432, which is the max zoom magnification. the human eye sees things at the equivalent of about 50mm, however, so the FZ20 lens, to your eye, is really more like an -3.5x/+8.5x zoom. the TL-55 is a 1.4x converter, so combined with the ~ 8.5x optical magnification of the FZ lens, you'd getthe perceived optical equivalent of about 10x, equivalent to about 500mm in a 35mm SLR.

Squirl033 is right.

You cannot add up 2x to the zoom factor as Dwssas and Marigil have done.
2x zoom means 12x 2 = 24 (not 12 + 2 = 14 or 12x + 6x =18x).

12x plus a 6x multiplier would be 432mm x 6 = 2592mm, while the FZs digital zoom 4x makes it achieve1728mm.

And to add to narmers expanation the TL55 will increase the 432mm to 604mm.

Or aproximately 1/2 again as much as you had and you can still use the digital zoom so you can multiply that by 2 or 3 0r 4

And just in case you still are confused this statement is 100% wrong.

According to the exif data, 12x is Digital Zoom Ratio Off. 14x is Digital Zoom Ratio 1.40. 18x is DZR 1.80. Therefore, since the tl55 is listed as being a 1.4x tele, one would expect the tl55 (with digital zoom off) to be about the same as digital zoom at 14x. They are not very close. 14x digital shows significantly more magnification than the tl55. These shots were taken from about 100ft with the fz5.

FZ5 at 12x

FZ5 at 14x

FZ5 w/ tl55

And for an even better demo and explanation, go to http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/index.html

FZ-10, Other useful information, A Simple Equivalent Focal Length Test Also browse his whole website for lots of good info. It's a must read for FZ users.
