I have the FZ-1 and I "think" it's mentioned in the manual. Has something to do with the IS system or the elements - not sure, but it's not a defect.

Can you be more specific? "a bad noise" is a little vague. I have an FZ20 and it makes the same startup sound no matter what position I hold the camera. I can hear the lens extending and the focus locking in. But it all sounds like music to my ear. No grinds, growls, or nashing. Just a smooth winding sound.

my FZ20 makes little whirring sounds every so often, when i shift the point of focus or when there's a dramatic change in distance to the nearest object it can "see"... i've been told it's just the autofocus mechanism. set the camera to manual focus ("turning off" the autofocus mechanism) and see if it still makes the same sound.

Hard to say without actually hearing it. The first FZ20 I had developed a grinding noise in the first week. I took it back and compared it to another one and it was a defect so I got a replacement. I would try to find a store with one and see if your's sounds the same as a new one.

Actually I think I would also make a noise if I had to start facing down
