If Nikon can squeeze a5 MP into its new S1 then Panasonic can do better in our favorite Fluzis.

5mp is more than enough.

The Nikon and the FZ use the same size 1/2.5" ccd. More megapixels in the same size sensor=noise. Larger sensor=larger camera=more $$$. Features and noise reduction technology are more important than sheer numbers of megapixels. 2cents.

Panasonic has the same sized 5Mp sensor in the FZ5, which is pretty compact for a 12X zoom with f2.8-3.3. They also have it in other cameras like the pocket sized and stabilized FX7. You must have something in mind but I can't imagine what it might be.

Not on the 1/2.5" sensor.. It's already plenty crowded. I can get great results with it as is but I'm afraid that jamming another MP onto the camera (without a larger sensor) would only degrade things, not imorove them. If you want an FZ20 update that would improve pp options, ask for a RAW mode instead.. None of it's going to happen for the FZ20 anyway..

Adding one megapixel is not going to help image quality. The common thinking is more megapixels is better. The FZ in it's current form and size of sensor is limited. There many other areas to improve the camera and keep the size and price still appealing.

There must be some advantage to a larger sensor.

A larger Sensor, yes.. The same size sensor with another MP, no. Are we (I) misunderstanding your post?

There are advantages to a larger sensor, but to keep the FZ at the same scale and zoom physics dictates a small sensor size. Larger sensors with long zooms fall into the dslr category with current technology. As it stands you can't have a FZ style camera with a large sensor.
