At 40 ft and f2.8 the DOF is only about 3 feet with 12x zoom plus 2x Raynox (144mm effective focal length).
Ian - How did you arrive at the 3 feet for dof? Is there a formula for this incorporating f stop, distance to subject and effective focal length?

Yes Fred, I used the online calculator at:
http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

For the FZ5/10/20, the effective focal length at 12x zoom is 72mm. At a subject distance of 40ft and f2.8, 12x zoom, this gives a near focus of 38.7ft and a far focus of 41.4ft.

Go to Raynox site and they are recommending to use only the 2020 2.2X with their own adapter. I used it with my FZ10/20 with "usable" results after using the Raynox adapter. Vignettes up to 12X and expect only the center to mostly sharp. This lens did not work well with my original 62mm Pemaraal adapter. Some old test shots at links below. Just nice to test but not as a regular TC.
cheers,
gil

Thanks, your results look a lot like what I was getting but your center focus is better. Just could not justify spending about $200 when I get better results with a C-210 stacked on a cheap 1.5X tele.. Vingetting is heavy with this set-up but I want it for long distance shots of birds etc. so cropping is not a problem. Here is a shot of some goldfinches I took at over 100 feet using this set-up. The image was cropped to 100% sharpened and ran through neat image. It is not to bad, but like most of us I want better.

I also bought a 2020 and am very disappointed with it. In particular, the FZ20's autofocus system does not appear to be a good match with the 2020. I wish I'd known this before I bought it! I replaced it with the Raynox 1540 which although less powerful has a resolution of 340 lines/mm. The 2020 only has 260 lines/mm. I think this is the crux of the problem. The 2020 just isn't a very good lens.
