I was around my place a few weeks ago, and I saw this funny looking beetle....when I first saw it, I though it was some plastic tab! cos of the shiny body. Than I brought out my CP instead of my 6T by mistake and could not take a good pic of it. Today, I went back again and saw it again!

The funny thing of this little guy is that he can raise his front flap to reveal its eyes....dunno why it does that.....like lifting the cap to get a better view :bsmilie:

Taken with my usual set up:
FZ10+6T+Sigma CU, Ext flash, ISO 50, F8, various speeds

I would appreciate any comments on the pics and if any ID, I will really appreciate it.....

:shock::shock:

I've never seen anything like this before! We certainly don't have such beetles here in Germany.

Cool shots of a cool insect!

Those translucent covers and big elongated dark eyes, he almost looks like a cartoon character. A very interesting looking little critter. In fact a midevil Japanese war helmet resembles its spotted clear cover.

Very interesting bug and nice photos. Was the clear cover part of the wings?

Thanks guys for the comments.

I am told that it is a Tortise beetle? And I have seen someone post a green looking one.

I am not too sure how it flew, though I did see it fly, but not sure which part flies.....

i believe it's a spotted tortoise beetle (or maybe a golden tortoise beetle).. your source was correct. there's also the good ol' tortoise beetle which i believe are the green ones and the golden tortoise beetle. but i've seen them in gold, orange, green, and red (i've heard of them being green-blue and purple too). i think they're a type of leaf beetle, not sure on that, but they're a pretty popular beetle from what i hear. bug watchers really luv their colorings. the only ones i've seen in person are red ones tho. :sad: i think they're rare around here but they still manage to eat my flowers (not as bad as i make it sound). they've got really odd feet. :-)

the pictures came out great, and it seems any "bug person" would be able to make an easy ID from those shots. i especially like the one capturing the huge black eyes.
