A door or window screen and porch light are an excellent venue for insect shots. The screen gives a good background to shoot against and the light provides enough light to focus and then use the onboard flash. These were with the fz5 w/ flash intensity at -2, f8, -1ev, 1/125s, iso80.

All but the last cicada were with the oly b-macro (working distance about 12"); the last with the b-macro + nikon 3t (working distance about 9").

5x zoom

5x zoom

9x zoom

12x zoom

12x b-macro+3t

One more much smaller bug w/ bmac at 9x

Cicadas are sometimes mistakenlycalled locusts as in the 13 or 17 year locust. This one is an annual cicada and measures ~2.5 inches long. The males makemore or less a constant mating noise (similar to a squirrel's bark) in the late summer in the US, though this one was not -thank goodness.

"The male cicada makes the loudest sound in the insect world. By vibrating the ribbed plates in a pair of amplifying cavities at the base of the abdomen, the mating sound of the cicada can be heard as far as 440 yards! These insect noisemakers rarely ever stop calling for a mate. The noise from large groups of cicadas can often drown out even the noisiest lawnmower."
