Hi,

Well like Nick I have started to get bitten by the B&W bug. I am after you opinions on which looks better, I am personally fond of the B&W one myself.

The first is the original untouched colour photo, the second is the desaturated and altered via selective contrast adjustments of the sky and bridge.

Cheers

Both have their good points but as Hiroshi says the B&W does have more impact (drama).

For my tuppence worth, the black and white gives the jetty a lot more character than the color..........did you try taking the shot in the camera b/w mode? I have found many to be quite interesting.

Found my old orange filter in my cupboard.
Seeing all these nice B&W may help to reactivate it!
I love clouds and B&W.....
thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comments all, Hazz I usually shoot in standard color and then convert in PS. I guess I should shoot in B & W but I like having the choice to convert it or not.

Cheers

the b/w in this instance is superior to the colour. I guess it depends on the situation. Sometimes (not in this instance) b/w saves a bad picture I find as it shows some other detail which is lost in colour.

Hazzarbone, I think that at least in some of the B/W pics I took, if you shot the same pic in color and then desaturate in PP, the result will be more noisy than one directly shot with BW in camera color mode.
But I also nearlyalways shot in color and eventually convert into BW via desaturation + NR, or one of many other means to achieve BW with PS.

Now to leave the technical aspect and deal with the creative one:
I think I am saying an obvious thing, but BW is more effective and dramatic whenever color may be distracting.
Therefore when the attention is/must beon trajectories, shapes or an action, the lack of colors makes the brain concentrate more and more directly on the rest...

In your BW pics, clouds are more contrasted.
The lake-mountain line continues at the same level of the wooden structure on the right. Don't know if it would have been better to take the shot from an upper position... to show the whole lake coast.
Anyway BW is better here, just for the trajectory of the wooden structure and its dark shadow on the floor planks.
