I read an article in Outdoor Photographer (October issue, I think) about using spotting scopes for long-distance photography. As far as I know, most teleconverters magnify at 1.4-2x. Spotting scopes (I believe they are used primarily for hunting, birding and so on) have far greater magnifying power: 10, 20, 30 or more X. It looks like a pretty good idea, but the catch is that the camera has to be mounted to the scope via step rings, adaptors, etc. Have any of you had any experience with this? Could you recommend specific scopes and the adaptors, step rings, etc. that would be required to set up such a system?

There is a digiscoping forum here at steves and you need the opinions of those people trying those things but the short of it is that a camera with a lens as large as the FZ cameras does not work well in that application.

Every once in a while someone will say their friend did it and it worked with a FZ20..but I have my doubts.

Scopetronics sells a 2 inch eyepiece which they say will work but with less than satisfactory results and Kowa made an eyepiece for just that application and they told me it did not work on the FZ10 or 20.

but here is the forum here

Thanks. I'll check it out. If my FZ20 won't work well, I'll check out the possibility of using my Pentax Optio 33. It has a much smaller, but very sharp, lens. It only has 3X zoom, but if that's magnified by 10x or more, it will still give me great reach.
