The Sunpak series are very good and not too expensive. Do not get caught up with fancy panning heads. It is not needed for still photography.

Do you think I can just buy 6601? I can't really find 8001, but my local ritz camera has 6601 by sunpak.

I have the 6601UT; the 8801 has at bit stiffer leg.

I use the 2-second timer to take pictures so that pressing the button does not shake the picture. The other this I do to increase stiffness is the following. The center post of the unit has a female screw thread. I have screwed in an eye screw and attached a bungee cord. The other end of the bungee I form into a loop with the metal piece. When I am ready to take the picture I step into the loop creating a downward force on the legs. Now that is rock solid. When I am in the field I loop the free end of the cord around the head and flip it over my shoulder. Because it is light I carried for days on my last trip to the middle east.

Amazon has the 9900Ut for $39.00
