I took this FZ30 shot from waaaaaay in the back at the San Francisco Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival on Sunday. It's using the 3M-EZ (3 megapixel extended zoom), which is a fancy marketing way of saying the camera shows and crops to only 3M of a possible 8M, but it increases the effective zoom to 19x or something. It's so nice to be able to get closeups from so far away.

BTW - handheld, overhead with the LCD aiming downward.

The full photo, plus ones of Dr. Ralph Stanley and Emmylou Harris, are here:

And god bless Warren Hellman, the wonderful guy who brings us two days of free bluegrass every year!

- Ty

The Dolly shot is quite good based on how you had to get that shot. Impressive kit that FZ30.

What is your estimate of the distance you were shooting.

I'm terrible at guessing distance - ifwe look at the exposure data maybe we can deduce it?

Focal Length 88.8 mm (669 mm in 35mm equivalent)

So how do we translate that into distance to subject?

(That's 17.6x. The camera is 12x at 8M, but if you crop the target area on the sensor to 3M, it can reach 19x)

(And it was 1/250 at f/5.6, auto, normal, ISO 80, by the way)

Thanks! Love that image stabilization - handheld, overhead, after LOTS of coffee, and it was still clear at a shutter speedslower than 1/focal length.
