Tried a wee bit of portrait shots with my nephew as the guinea pig - external flash, large white card as a reflector, ISO50, aperture mode f2.8, hand held. Resized in pshop, USM.

First shot of my nephew

Another shot of the bubba, this one makes him look a lot older than 10 years.

Last one - Self Portrait. This one taken by my 10 year old nephew and was his second shot and time he's ever used the FZ10!

I've seen some really stunning portrait shots lately and really want to see if its possible to use the FZ's even in a limited way for doing them. Do need to look into lighting, use of reflectors ideally i;d have prefered to take the pics next to a window and use the sunlight but hey it was 11pm so no chance of that.

Your technique looks to be a fine start. Perhaps I'd rather said they look fine from a technical standpoint. Don't you think? Others might mention softening, glow, who knows. I'll be checking back to see.

I think theyre ok'ish but not what i was hoping for - need to work on using the 383, and working with a reflector/white card and getting shallow DOF. Need a new model a tired 10 year old doesn;t help!

Stick it on a tripod and keep doing self-portraits. Think and dream about what you want and the easiest, simplest way of getting there. By the way, whats "pressie" mean?

HarjTT, Looks like the only thing lacking is a muted or blurred background. Jim

I like the second shot, but agree with Jim on the background.
