Still learning the capabilities of my new (4-weeks) FZ5 by snapping away (Amazing how many photos one can snap/hold on a 1GB card!).

The following are a series of photos taken from a tripod following one of the many jets traversing the Mojave Desert from the LA basin today. I thought it gives one a good idea of the powerful zoom capabilities when the 12X zoom is coupled w/a TCON17 lens as it shows the viginetting at no zoom (36mm x 1.7=~61mm Eq), at 12X x 1.7X or ~734mm Eq (432 x 1.7)and just how close it takes one at full zoom + 4X digital (423 x 1.7 x 4= ~2,900mm?). The jet is probably at 30,000' given the contrails which puts it about 6-miles high and ? how far away slant distance.

I used IS2; Center Spot Metering; AF Mode of spot-H w/ AF Trigger half depress. Taken in burst mode attempting to line up plane's line of flight into center of frame for focusing. I'm 'in-training' for hopefully taking some Bald Eagle photos at their local wintering grounds at nearby Silverwood Lake... Looking at the RDS/Daisy for assistance but figured practice when not under the gun will help develop my technique to hopefully rival some of the incredible photos on the forum.

Is the apparent lack of sharpness/focus due more to the framing at time of exposure (not in the focus-spot), the digital zoom, movementor ...? Photos were processed through default Neat Image for noise only and cropped to 800 x 600. Any and all comments, crtiiques and suggestions/guidance greatly appreciated!

tiger... I know, I know... I noticed your posting of the RDS mounted and drooled somewhat. My FZ5 has no hot shoe and I've been trying to figure out how to possibly side mount one to it as the popup flash presents a challenge.

As I indicated in my original post, I'm anticipating needing/using one. I used to have an 8" 2000mm Celestron telescope and needed a spotting scope to know where it was being aimed at inthe dark night skies looking for the far, far away galaxies.

I've seen the strapped on version I believe Gene or John Reed had posted but I'm waiting for a more elegant attachment on my FZ5 such as yours to facilitate ease in dismantling for storing in a carrying case.

I'm still struggling with getting a good sharp telephoto focus, though. I've tried spot-H with minimal success. I plan on shooting another few hundred shots with 3-spot to see if that will increase my keeper ratio (or could it be related more to the use of the TCON17?)...

Keep up the postings. Its members such as you that keep us torn between snapping, Post Processing and reading/seeing what good photos really look like!

The below is one of my marginal handheld keepers with the FZ5+TCON17; still looking for a sharp focus...
