The first is stunning! Can't say I care for the second though - I'm really not sure why . . . it just looks so . . harsh? As always though, just my two pence worth :-)

#1 is my choice (very nice indeed), to much contrast (IMO) for the second...

I wasn't going to respond at first, because I couldn't (still can't) make up my mind if I liked the second one or not. The first one is beautiful and I love it. The second one says something totally different to me, sort-of eerie ora bit disturbing or something. It's made me look at it a couple of times, so it is definitely effective that way.

The first one has a lovely soft "feel" to it. The second one looks oversharpened. Also, the contrast is too great, which makes it very dark in the middle. Love the first one, though.

indeed the first one is soft-diffused and the second is heavily contrasted: two opposite PP directions...
