...and only a red filter can bring out the contrast in the bird's red (yes red) eyes

the problem with such filter effects, is that you only have red, or orange.. you can not mix them nor can you fine tune the effects..

learning to use channel mixer just gives you so much more control.. resulting in better images once you get the hang of it.. sure its a bit of a learning curve, but its worth it..

plus do not forget your normal levels and curves edits.. they are the only way to get true blacks and whites with good tone ranges and the contrast you need.

yeah, the use of levels can be very awarding. The filters I used are not limited to three colours though. It is a color pattern that lets you choose the filter color stagelessly. There's also white, rosé, cyan, deep red, light purple etc. etc. -the whole range. I'm sure there must be a word for such a color palette, but I don't know it now....

Dustin and Ivan,

thanks for your comments and suggestions. I'll just need to spend some more time working with my editor of choice. I've used photoshop and even have a copy at work but I just can't justify the expense for home use. I really like PSP, you can do many of the same things as PS you just need to explore the program to fine it.

Again thanks for the ideas, comments.
