Hi Dian,

Interesting photo...

I am not sure of origins of the damage to the limb...it appears to be disease or storm related.

That said, a tree damaged or diseased is culled over several years' time by the work of insects which in turn feed woodpeckers who guano feeds the grasses and on and on...

It is like John Muir once said...

"Everytime I study an isolated aspect of nature, I find out it is connected to everything else in the universe."

Also,given how I sense your mind works...I highly recommend books by Richard Feynmann

Example: What Do You Care What Other People Think?: Further Adventures of a Curious Character

Google on Feynmann...you would be surprised.

That said, you would be welcome on my land to shoot photos to your heart's content! :idea:
