I have a FZ20 and a sunpak 383.

Any ideas on how to get a good picture with out red eye if I cant bounce the flash of the ceiling? Will a diffuser help?

Yes a diffuser will help but there are a couple things more important.....if you have the sunpak 383 you should be able to totally eliminate red eye.

First the more light in the room or area the better as the eyes are already accustom to some light.

But the most important factor is the angle formed by a line drawn between the lens and the eyes and back to the flash....the larger that angle the less chance for red eye....

and all other things equal the closer you are to the subject the larger that angle.

And the more you zoom the smaller the angle so do not zoom, but move closer instead.

Since I adopted that method I almost never get any red eye and I do not use the anti-red eye feature as the delay bugs me.

I have one but very seldom use it. but it softens the light so it will help redeye.

I just take the photo and if the preview looks over or under exposed I change the flash setting.

Believe me it has more to do with the angle as far as red eye goes.
