Just checked out the video interview, and Dave says he expects it to be in the $2000 range for pricing. Maybe he's right, maybe not. Again, we'll have to wait and see. thekman
if this thing comes out at $2000 for the body only, it's gonna get eaten alive. considering it'd be competing against the Canon 20/30D and the Nikon D70,which bothoffer APS-size sensors, not 4/3, anda much wider lens selection -including IS! -if Panny streets this at 2 grand, it'll flop. thei best hope is to price it to compete with the Rebel XT and D50, as entry level models, at least until they can prove they can compete with best-in-class image quality from the Canons, and can offer a wide enough array of lenses to match the competition.

Squirrl

Thats what Pana initially stated when they announced the tie up with Oly last year - to intro the cam for the entry/mid market aimed specifically at those that don;t have an exisitng lens system or wanting to move to a DSLR. They'll need to keep the whole package between £700-1000 or around the $1500USD mark otherwise like you stated they'll get eaten alive.

Cheers

HarjTT... even at $1500 US they'll be in trouble. for not much more than that ($1579) i can get a Canon 20D with an APS sensor, arguably the lowest noise and best image quality in any DSLR under $2000, AND an image-stabilized 17-85 (28-135mm) lens. if Panny wants to sell this combo, they're gonna have to market it for under a grand for the body, and not more than about $1300for the body and lens,at least until they establish their bona fides in the DSLR market.

$2000 is around $4000 Aus. Considering that now the 30D is out I could get a 20D for half that amount soI'd be going in that direction. $2000 is a LOT of money so the results would have to be a step above.

It'd be a shame if they did charge that much as it looks like one hell of a camera. Wait and see I guess...

And Canon uses the same CMOS sensor in the bargain Rebel.

Squirrll does have a very vaild point - the new 30D + 18-55mm lens is only 1200GBP, although in USD thats about $2000.00. The price point and the target market is important. So far Pana has not restated which end of the market its targeted for, is it still entry or now entry to mid, ie. Canon 30D/Nikon D200?

Here's the price on Bhphotovideo for a Canon 20D setup:

EOS 20D, 8.2 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera with Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens

Price:$ 1,619.95 = 930.00GBP

The Oly E330 body only on adorma is going for $999.00USD and with Kit lens for $1099.00USD.

http://www.adorama.com/IOME330K.html

As the E330 and the L1 share a lot in common I can;t see how Pana could be charging a lot more - I think the $1300USD inc. that Squirrl stated is about right. Who will bite first ? Exisitng LC1/D2 users will easily spend $1500+USD on the cam simply becuase they have been waiting 2 years for a replacement and have the cash. I'm also sure theres a lot of Oly SLR users that are seriously considering the L1.as they can still use their existing lenses.

If the L1 is over priced by a silly margin then you could always pic up an E330 body only for $999 and splash the rest of the lens. Alternatively you can pick up an E1 for just 600USD (brand new) and then get the Lecia lens and use it in Mode1.

Cheers

I agree, I don't see how Panasonic can realistically charge too much more over the Oly E330. I obviously like the Pana version better but if they have roughly the same capability and the Oly even has a more versitile LCD screen to boot.

One thing I didn't hear in the video that I HAVE to assume that they have addressed is more sophisticated flash control on the new L1 over anything in the FZ line.

I could be very tempted to pick up the Oly E330 and the Leica lens combination, assuming the lens is redily available which is a whole other matter.

I don't know why I'm even expressing my preference seeing how my wife would kill me since I just got the FZ30 in Dec.

Hmmmm indeed....this one's a 7.5 MP Anthony. I saw a listing for a 5 MP too, but slightly different model number. Don't think it's the DSLR. Heh heh, can't wait to hear more. Lots of spec about price. Might be a home run IF they keep the $$ reasonable. Me, hillbilly that I am, must have lots of neat features, A N D IS AND affordable big zzzooooom.
