So now that I have been fooling around with my camera the last couple days, too cold to go out sadly, I have found that my old cheapy tripod is not that good. I have found a few posts around the forum that talk about good ones and bad ones, but none really specific to the FZ30.

There are a couple I have found on the net that seem interesting, maybe I was hoping I could get some feedback.

1) Slik 340DX - have to find a retailer that stocks this, as the local one only does special order on it.

2) Giottos MT-9810 (a bit pricey) - nice features, would probably get a kit that includes head.

3) Sunpak Fieldmaster - cheapest one of the bunch, has some of the same features, but not sure of construction vs. the others.

Thanks for your input, I would probably be looking to get one in the next couple weeks since the weather will be improving for hiking/shooting soon!

IMHO

The slik should be a usable tripod... notice I did not say good, and I know nothing of that giotto but I would advise you to not get that sunpak or most any other sunpak.

Look at this line of tripods they do not make the best or the worst but they do make a good tripod for the money.

With respect to the tripods I mentioned..........

I have some very serious surgery (7 hrs) coming up in the next week or so. As soon as I get back on my feet I'll make
up a list.......with prices and photos.

My next significant photographic purchase will be a tripod.

Since my FZ30 renewed my interest inphotography, I have been reading anything and everything which might help.

Time and again, I read that in the quest for better picturesa good tripod should be used whenever possible. This is especiallyapplicable when using the reach of the FZ30 zoom in less than brightl light.

I have subsequently spent far too long reading and talking to people about tripods. Realising that my 20 year old $40 aluminium effort is junk, I know I have to buy a new tripod. Goodones are not cheap but should outlast me.

I would love to be able to afford the latest carbon fiber /magnesium job but realistically I will probably buythe very popularManfrotto / Bogen 055 legs and a quality medium ball head.

cheers,

Max

Nice timing! I was just thinking about this very subject but with a little different twist (maybe)... I am looking for a good tripod but also small and light. I've shot very little with a tripod but am looking for better results with my FZ30. It would be great to have a good, sturdy unit that isn't bulky and will collapse into about 18"-24" or thereabouts. We travel quite a lot but lugging a camera bagAND a huge tripod around just isn't an option. Anyone have any suggestions in the "light but decent" department? Is there one out there?

I suppose there are degrees of 'sturdiness' ( if thats a word) butfrom what I can gatherit seems LIGHT AND STURDY = Carbon Fiber = $$$!
