I am considering 2 digital cameras, either the Pentax Optio 550 or the Canon Powershot S50. The main reason I am considering the Pentax is the 5X optical zoom. If everything else is equivalent, I'll opt for the higher zoom a few more dollars with the Pentax. Any suggestions?

The Pentax 555 is now available. Same camera but it fixes some things the 550 owners didn’t like. For one they seem to think the sharpening is too aggressive and exacerbates the noise. I think the lens is the same and it is pretty good. It is going for $550 online with free shipping.
